What’s Happening This Month: MND Global Day and World Scleroderma Day

Here’s a recap of some international events and awareness campaigns that are happening this month of June:

21 June: Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Global Day

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a neurological disorder affecting the nerves that communicate between the brain and the muscles. This then affects how a person moves, speaks, or breathes. Over time, this causes the muscles to weaken which can potentially lead to paralysis and death. The average life expectancy of people with MND is two to three years.

According to studies, over 2,000 individuals in Australia are living with MND. Every day, at least two people get diagnosed with MND and about two die from the disease. Unfortunately, there are no effective treatments or cures available yet to treat MND.

21 June is an international day to spread awareness about the ongoing fight against this disease.

29 June: World Scleroderma Day

29 June commemorates the death of Swiss-German artist Paul Klee who passed away in 1940 due to diffuse scleroderma. Annually, this day is recognised by the global community as a key day to raise awareness about the disease and to drive certain causes and activities that will help support people with scleroderma.

Scleroderma (also called systemic sclerosis) is a chronic and rare autoimmune disease that creates a systematic condition of thickening and hardening of the tissues. Although it generally affects the skin, this can also affect other body parts such as the lungs, heart, kidneys, oesophagus, and gastrointestinal tract.

Scleroderma can be life-threatening. However, this is not considered infectious and contagious. Several treatments are now available to help treat this disease, most especially if detected early on.

Depending on the severity of the disease, scleroderma can generally affect how a person performs his/her daily activities such as cooking, cleaning the house, or even dressing up. At the moment, around 6,000 individuals in Australia are affected by this disease.
