Welcome New Powers For The Commish

Put your hand up if you expect the best possible service when you employ a new provider to assist you with your goals?

Well, the NDIS recently released information regarding new powers granted to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commissioner that allow the banning of unsuitable providers and workers from working with NDIS Participants.

This applies whether the provider or worker is active in the sector or not.

Before we dive into other detail, that last bit is worth highlighting. Stuart Robert, Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme said this about the amendments;

“The NDIS Commissioner will be able to apply banning orders to people even if they are not currently working in the NDIS.

“This means workers who have left the NDIS, including where they have been fired due to unsuitable behaviour, can be banned from re-entering the field.”

If information suggests someone has been involved in poor conduct in aged care or even child-care they can be banned. Furthermore, information of this type can come from sources outside of the NDIS, which certainly gives us confidence in a more appropriate vetting process for people entering the sector, not to mention preventing those who’ve been asked to leave from re-entering.

To ensure the NDIS Amendment (Strengthening Banning Orders) Bill 2020 has real and tangible effect, the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission makes the details of providers and workers who have been banned publicly available in the NDIS Provider Register. People with disability, their supporters and providers can use the Register to check that the people they are engaging to deliver NDIS services have not had a banning order against them. We encourage you to use this tool before engaging new providers.

With quality care and services being at the top of the list for all Participants, it’s reassuring that all providers (current and prospective) are now under the kind of scrutiny that will ensure they get it.

It’s updates like these that make us proud to be a part of the broader NDIS community – we’re honoured to be able to offer the level of service that we do to the people we do, and we welcome changes such as these that aim to ensure everyone in our community is treated with the respect and care they deserve.
